Alas

2012 - 2016

Alas is a visual lament comprised of two Alas is a photographic series of visual laments I created between 2013–2016. It comprised a single image that embodies the encompassing title, Alas, as well as two related series of images respectively titled, A Certain Slant of Light and Wife to Widow. It visually explores both the remembrance of a person and the realisation of mortality that comes with bereavement.

Hélas

Hélas est une série photographique de lamentations visuelles que j’ai créée entre 2013 et 2016. Elle comprend une seule image qui incarne le titre global, Hélas, ainsi que deux séries d’images connexes intitulées respectivement A Certain Slant of Light (Une certaine inclinaison de lumière) et Wife to Widow (De femme àveuve). Elle explore visuellement à la fois le souvenir d’une personne et la prise de conscience de la mortalité qui accompagne le deuil.

A Certain Slant of Light
(2014 - 2016)

Two poems inspired the series A Certain Slant of Light. The images titles in the series come from the poem by Emily Dickinson.

There's a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference –
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, 'tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –

This final poem my husband, Roger, wrote was discovered after his death and I embroidered it on silk lilies shown in The Landscape Listens.

One thing about being in this bed
if this is the place where I will die
is the panorama of the view
and the fact that you can tell
where the sun is located
every day that you can see
its rise and set
and it matters to me
to know this
to be located somehow
on this earth of ours
that we ride around on
until we all arrive at
and come to our own ends.

Wife to Widow: Dark Adaptation (2013)

Dark adaptation is a scientific term for what happens to colour when perceived by the human eye under low light. The colour spectrum shifts toward blue and colours like dark red become black.
